Position: Test & Validation Engineer 

Domain: MHEV, PHEV & BEV Systems

Job Type: Permanent (£40k to £55k Annual Gross), Contract (£25 per Hour to £33 per Hour Outside IR35)

Location: Onsite West Midlands, UK*

Job Summary: 

The ideal candidate will be well-versed in both manual and automated testing approaches, with specific experience in VIL (Vehicle-in-the-Loop), PIL (Powertrain-in-Loop), MHEV system testing, PHEV system testing, BEV System testing and gas path emissions testing (petrol-based systems). This role demands a proactive engineering capability of working across systems and test disciplines to support product verification, compliance, and validation goals. You must have hands-on experience in test rig specification, setup instrumentation, test creation & execution, as well as strong capabilities in Design Verification Plan (DVP) creation, test case development, and performance/functionality sign-off, identify Hardware/software issues and conduct root cause analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and deliver comprehensive test plans and test cases for propulsion system components and subsystems.

  • Implement test automation frameworks for VIL and PIL environments, integrating with simulation and test tools.

  • Conduct MHEV/PHEV/BEV system testing, including hybrid control strategies, battery interactions, and electrical energy flow validation.

  • Perform gas path and emissions testing for petrol propulsion systems in compliance with industry standards and regulations.

  • Manage test execution schedules, monitor progress, and report issues with reproducibility and root-cause clarity.

  • Collaborate with design, systems, and software teams to ensure full traceability between requirements, test cases, and results.

  • Maintain test rigs, tools, instrumentation, and ensure calibration and accuracy of measurements.

  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and test quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Document all test processes, results, and configurations in a clear and traceable manner.

  • Embrace Agile framework into everyday ways of working including daily stand-up, sprint retrospective, backlog refinement and showcases. Define and deliver MBI’s and Stories to manage workflow in Group Sprints, escalate and resolve issues using Agile tools and methods.

  • Support problem definition, investigation and resolution using appropriate tools and processes.

  • Conduct the design analysis and development with utmost quality within agile framework.

  • To support the design, development workstreams within the scope of the engineering development projects.

  • Support prototype design freeze activities for customer applications, support customer production / prototype sites & liaise with their engineering team.

  • Support the design & development of Propulsion System.

  • Work with design teams to develop and optimise solutions considering multi-attributes within defined deadlines and time constraints.

  • Support the continual development of tools and techniques which enhance capability, improve quality and robustness of Virtual models.

  • Conduct the design analysis and development with utmost quality within agile framework

 

Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required: 

Technical Skills: 

  • Strong understanding of propulsion systems, including petrol engines and hybrid electric architectures. 

  • Hands-on experience with VIL / PIL test environments, including automation setup and test scripting. 

  • Familiarity with test management tools, HIL systems, real-time simulation environments, and data acquisition. 

  • Deep understanding of gas path emissions testing, emission compliance parameters, and instrumentation. 

  • Experience in CAN, LIN, and diagnostic tools such as CANalyzer, INCA, or similar platforms. 

Experience: 

  • 5+ years of experience in automotive or propulsion system testing. 

  • Direct experience in test automation, hardware-in-the-loop, and xHEV (MHEV, PHEV), BEV system testing. 

  • Experience with test execution, validation, and verification processes aligned to V-Model or similar frameworks. 

  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ISO, WLTP, RDE testing procedures) is preferred. 

    Soft Skills: 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Clear communicator, both written and verbal, with technical reporting expertise. 

  • Highly organized with attention to detail and safety-first mindset. 

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced engineering environment. 

 

Education: 

  • Educated to a minimum of Degree level and good knowledge & testing experience of power unit systems and in particular ICE, MHEV, PHEV, BEV propulsion system commodities. 

  • Additional training or certification in test automation, propulsion systems, or emissions compliance is a plus.
