Reliability Engineer
Posted: 12th April, 2025
Position: Reliability Engineer
Job Type: Permanent / Contract
Location: Onsite in West Midlands, UK / Remote
Job Summary:
Due to the increasing demand of Reliability Engineering, QDSL is building a new team exclusive focused on Reliability & Safety at all levels; Sub-Component / Component / Product within the Automotive domain. This is a great opportunity to join a fast-growing team with strong core values on Quality of Health, Work / Work-Life Balance, accountability, service and Integrity.
Key Responsibilities
-
As a Reliability Engineer, you need to be able to think about how things can fail as well as how they work. Whether failures are theoretical, or we are responding to actual events, an understanding of failure mechanisms and recognising possible event scenarios is key for this role.
-
Failures will inevitably influence the product’s operation, so the ability to think “big picture” and to see how a component failure will escalate to impact the engine/battery/EDU/Inverter, vehicle, platform, and ultimately the customer experience of the product is required
-
To capture and numerically assess the causes of system rejections and provide them to the Services organisation to allow operational availability and cost to be managed.
-
Carry out Safety & Reliability Analysis using techniques such as FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis, Numerical Risk Assessment, FRACAS, Functional Hazard Assessment
-
Carry out Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) analysis using FMEA and transferring the output into a digital tool.
-
Carry out life cycle component analysis. Reliability Goal Allocation - System, Subsystem & Component level
-
Work on digital tools using Reliasoft, Excel, MS office, et.al
-
Manage, maintain and analyse the fleet reliability databases for any products in order to identify common or recurring issues.
-
To act on the results of any reliability analysis or validation test result to ensure that the safety and integrity of the Electrification systems is not compromised in any way
-
Because of the wide range of systems that can fail in an Engine/ EDU/ Battery/ Inverter, et.al, you will interact with a wide range of specialists and senior project figures. Key interactions are with the Service Engineering and Design Engineering functions / Cross Functional Teams (CFT) and create reliability awareness & define deliverables to produce a world class failure-free product.
-
The ability to work with a broad range of specialists and projects and to be able to put complex ideas across to senior engineers is therefore desirable.
-
Participate in product design process to understand product features, functions and lifecycle events to plan for reliability assessment
-
Perform lifecycle assessment and provide recommendations to design team to achieve life cycle targets.
-
Perform FMEA with design team to help create robust design.
-
Create a mathematical model for product reliability calculations based on the features/specification of mechanical/electrical components.
-
Plan application assessment, field measurements for better understanding of product use cases and loads expected.
-
Understanding evolving customer requirements and incorporating the same in development without much impact on timeline & cost.
-
Perform field data analysis to identify design weaknesses and report/component failure analysis.
-
Develop standard methods, trainings and methodologies and ensure implementation within organization for competence development. Share lessons learnt and develop best practice guidelines.
-
Defining, documenting and maintaining requirements throughout the engineering design process
-
Identification, evaluation, and prioritization of risks in early project phases.
-
Lead Failure analysis efforts of test and field failures for root cause identification and CAPA implementation using problem solving techniques like 8D, 5WHYs / FRACAS
Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required:
-
Degree or similar qualification in electrical or mechanical engineering or a related subject
-
Working knowledge of data visualisation tools and techniques (for example MS Excel, Reliasoft, etc)
-
Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) knowledge and understanding.
-
Familiarity with and experience in failure mode analysis with ability to problem solve and effectively communicate findings at different business levels
-
Knowledge of reliability engineering and statistical analysis
-
Minimum of three years’ experience in reliability engineering. Knowledge of statistical methods used for reliability analysis and design of validation test regimes
-
Meticulous attention to detail
-
Familiarity with the design, operation and environment of Automotive Electrification
-
Experience in applying Reliability & Safety processes and tools e.g. Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Failure Reporting Analysis and Corrective Action System (FRACAS)
-
System Reliability Modelling
-
Design for Reliability (DfR) techniques
-
Construction of Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) & Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
-
Reliability / Durability Testing, QALT (Quantitative Accelerated Lift Testing), HALT (Highly Accelerated Lift Testing), HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening), FEA & Physics of Failure (PoF) techniques
-
Reliability Demonstration Testing (RDT), Optimization of Test Sample size & Test Duration
-
DFMEA, DRBFM, Design of Experiments (DOE)
-
Reliability Growth Analysis (RGA)
-
Weibull Analysis, BX Life, Failure rate, MTTF (Mean Time to Failure), MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), Reliability & Critical Parts Prediction and Minitab software
-
Supplier Parts Reliability Management
-
Warranty Analysis & Forecasting Failure returns
-
Knowledge of key standards used in reliability at component level and product level such as ISO 16750, AEC-Q 100/101/104/200, JEDEC, MIL, IEC
-
Hands on experience Mathematical modelling, probability calculations for lifecycle and reliability
-
Able to communicate effectively, work flexibly in a multi-disciplinary team and on own initiative.
-
Knowledge of System Safety is highly desirable. Safety Standard ISO26262 Experience &/Or Certification.
