Position: Lead Test Engineer, Power Electronics Validation Team

Location: Onsite in West Midlands, UK

This role is responsible to determine the appropriate business processes for internal and supplier test content and also for supporting the application teams with test delivery resources. As the team expands, we need additional experienced component test engineers to apply best-in-class techniques on both our supplier developed content and our in-house designs. Our test capability covers software, hardware, integration, system and vehicle level testing with a mindset of continuous improvement as well as increasing partnership with our internal and external stakeholders. The objective is to deliver levels of reliability and robustness exceeding anything that we have seen before. Arrival of the right people will provide input into elimination of defects on future vehicle model years

Key Responsibilities 

  • Support the test process during development and production release phases for Power Electronic components with application on numerous electrified Powertrain programmes.

  • Ensure robust timing plans are developed and realised to achieve Program milestones and targets (Risk Identification, Quality / Functional defect detection & removal, and timing).

  • Work with a ‘Statement of Requirements’ to support supplier sourcing. Follow the ongoing development phases through to final delivery in partnership with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Review of existing test methods against requirements. Develop/customise test methods to align with new/modified requirements and continuous improvement.

  • Being an advocate for sharing new tools & techniques with internal teams as well as test case sharing to/from suppliers. Passionate about test automation and test efficiency and motivated to drive change.

  • Support of test management process (test tracking by SW & Calibration version and by project milestone)

  • Interaction with multiple internal teams to align component content with rig planning, stakeholder needs and the project milestone requirements.

  • Mentor and coordinate team members, including junior engineers and apprentices, some of whom will be working from different locations / different time zones.

  • Coordination of the team equipment and tools, and planning / procurement of additional tools.

 

Skills Knowledge and Experience 

Essential

  • Degree in relevant engineering discipline or in associated subjects such as software engineering, electrical engineering or other technical qualifications.

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in automotive powertrain engineering, ideally with power electronics, electric motor control or high voltage systems.

  • Understanding of control systems hardware, sensor technology, control software and diagnostics.

  • Experience of test virtualisation, CAE correlation, component rig test, system test and vehicle testing.

  • Basic understanding of ‘power-level’ 3 phase motor emulation.

  • Experience in operating and debugging dSpace HiL rigs. Preferably with PE components (inverters, DCDC converters & chargers).

  • Experience in Matlab/Simulink, dSpace tools including ControlDesk and related test automation toolchains.

  • Experience in Test Automation Tools (Automation Desk, Python, Keyword), Shell scripting and Git.

  • Experience in writing Design Validation Methods (DVM) from the requirements and also peer review of requirements during requirements maturation process.

  • Experience in test automation for powertrain load rigs including dyno systems, preferably with AVL PUMA.

  • Strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team.

  • Understanding of control systems hardware, including sensor technology, control software and diagnostics.

  • A working knowledge of the design and release process for safety critical automotive components / systems.

  • Experience of meeting deadlines.

  • The ability to project-manage a test series through to production and manage several components across multiple vehicle programmes.

  • Working Knowledge of Problem Resolution Techniques e.g. 8D

  • The ability to make effective decisions in the best interest of the business and customer

  • The ability to understand commodity timing plans (including Design Verification plans, programme plans and supplier timing plans)

  • An appreciation of system level issues and software is required.​​

Desired

  • A knowledge of typical BEV, MHEV and PHEV system solutions and technologies.

  • Understanding of regulatory needs applicable to BEV and PHEV solutions.

  • Experience of complex high voltage systems.

  • Experience of 3 phase motor simulation and motor modelling techniques.

  • Experience of HiL FPGA modelling with Xilinx.

  • Experience of defining and/or using appropriate analysis tools to optimise and verify thermal performance and hardware reliability/ durability.

  • Familiarity with RMDV or DOORS or equivalent requirements management toolchain.

  • Familiarity with electrical, EMC, climatic, environmental, lifetime test techniques.

  • Product launch experience

  • Experience of design FMEA’s

  • Knowledge of the APQP process and AIMS issue resolution process.

  • Experience of Change Management process.

  • Wide knowledge of electronic devices and circuits and their application, including power devices, microcontrollers, switch mode power supplies, RF circuits, analogue and digital circuits and design for EMC and printed circuit board design and manufacturing process.

 

Key Performance Indicators

  • Component HW+SW+Cal released to system / vehicle users with proven & acceptable quality levels

  • RMDV requirements covered by test reports

  • In house test deliverables met at the appropriate vehicle programme gateways.

  • Roadmap in place showing the path towards full test automation and reporting on HiLs and load rigs.

  • AIMS metrics and progress targets maintained

  • Supplier test timelines, content and quality achieved without “late surprises”

  • Test method alignment with suppliers to reduce, and ultimately remove, the occurrence of faults found via in-house testing of the supplier content.

  • Test case sharing between virtual, HiL, component and system rigs achieved with a roadmap towards maximum re-use.
