Position: FMA (Failure Mode Avoidance) Engineer 

Domain:  Engineering Quality / Product Assurance

Location: Onsite in West Midlands, UK / Remote

Job Summary: 

The ideal candidate will have a solid background in applying FMA methodologies across the product lifecycle, from concept to production, and will bring a strong mindset for risk identification, mitigation planning, and design robustness. Experience in facilitating FMA processes and leading peer reviews is essential.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the creation, application, and review of Design FMEAs (DFMEAs) for propulsion and mechatronic systems. 

  • Drive the Failure Mode Avoidance (FMA) process across multiple engineering domains to ensure product robustness. 

  • Facilitate cross-functional DFMEA reviews, ensuring alignment with design intent and functional objectives. 

  • Support design teams in identifying and mitigating potential failure modes early in the development process. 

  • Work closely with validation and systems teams to ensure failure modes are addressed through test plans and countermeasures. 

  • Apply lessons learned, past failure data, and historical FMEA knowledge to new programs and platforms. 

  • Ensure FMA deliverables are aligned with quality standards (e.g., APQP, IATF 16949, ISO 26262 if applicable). 

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of FMA processes, templates, and training within the organization. 

  • Support risk management documentation and gate review readiness throughout the product lifecycle. 

 

Skills, Knowledge and Experience Required: 

 

Technical Skills: 

 

  • Proven experience in applying DFMEA with a strong understanding of failure modes in propulsion and mechatronic systems. 

  • Solid knowledge of the FMA methodology, including linkage to DVP&R, boundary diagrams, P-diagrams, and test validation. 

  • Familiarity with risk assessment tools and industry-standard quality systems. 

  • Proficiency in FMEA tools and platforms (e.g., IQ-FMEA, APIS IQ, or Excel-based templates). 

 

Experience: 

 

  • 4–8 years of relevant engineering experience in automotive, aerospace, or similar regulated industries. 

  • Hands-on experience with propulsion system components, mechatronics, or embedded electromechanical systems. 

  • Background in leading or contributing to FMEA workshops and peer reviews. 

 

 

 

Soft Skills: 

 

  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong attention to detail and structured problem-solving capabilities. 

  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive a culture of quality and prevention. 

  • Organized and proactive in driving tasks to completion in fast-paced environments. 

 

Education: 

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field. 

  • Additional certifications in FMEA, Six Sigma, or Quality Systems are a plus.
